January | 23

January was equal parts playing and experimenting・contemplating what I’d like to make going forward・and setting goals for 2023.

  • March 4th | Los Angeles | Smooth N Purdy is having another pop up event at their amazing collaborative art space in Atwater Village 🙌🏻 I’m kind of feeling a group art offering— let’s get wild with color (dye, crayon, gouache, pencil, pastels, flowers) and see what we make together.

  • As previously mentioned The Sweetzer Life and I have a flower/dye/paint collab class in the works.

  • I want to create a large scale fabric piece incorporating dye and paint, with the hopes that it will be displayed in a gallery.

  • Speaking of large scale, Joel Reis and I are finessing images I’ve shot to create a run of fine art pieces for your favorite spaces.

  • I’m also on a mission to dye up the wearables I have on hand… and then not really order more. I think.

While I’m obsessed with creating art {using fabric and color as my medium} I’m not actually interested in selling clothing. Each piece I create is individually hand dyed— taking hours to dye/photograph/edit/list— and at times I see a disconnect between actual and perceived values because my art exists on/serves as functional pieces of clothing. I get that many people are jaded after paying for mass produced, machine made, crappy for the planet and the people clothing that exists… But I’m not a fan of my work being lumped in with or compared to those because 🍎 apples and oranges 🍊.

That said, would I be interested in collaborating with like minded brands who excel at selling unique and artisan wearables? Absolutely. I’m here to paint. Grow and learn, ya know?

Taking an afternoon to play with ideas that tickled my fancy: a new color palette, making colored cubes for another day, a fresh batch of sweatshirts and robes.

Living ten miles from a friend in Los Angeles can feel like living on a different planet (will it take me twenty seven minutes to get there or an hour and forty five minutes?!?!?)… but Liberty Worth and I are getting together once a month at her studio. Making, talking, dreaming.

I took a few minutes during my last visit to photograph these babies 👇🏻

For Emma | part deux

Last month I shared the first of Emma’s three custom tanks serving up celestial vibes — and here is number two.

↑ Dyed in an immersion bath of Logwood {extracted from bark chips} which took to areas pre-painted in aluminum acetate mordant paste. At the time of painting I didn’t know I’d want to go with Saturn-inspired vibes… hence the bonus crater and space dust-esque spatters.

← The finished piece, topped with multiple styles and colors of embroidery thread.

The excess dye tinting the background will fade with additional washes and time, leaving a crisper/cleaner white.

And here’s number three. I’m on a real kick with adding rainbow sprinkle confetti stitches for extra pops of color and texture, and I love that they can look chaotic or controlled. It’s also a pretty soothing activity when my brain is spent with dyeing but want to keep my hands moving.

If you’d like to listen along, the studio | 23 playlist on Spotify is just getting started.

I hope {like me} you’re enjoying our current Aquarius season. While I’m no astrology expert, I’m picking up on the vibes Sisters Village are throwing down.

The older I get, the more I enjoy information based on star stuffs. I’m also an Aquarian.

Until February ✌🏻
