I was invited to teach a textile artistry class at my son’s nursery school— and it was magic.

Before choosing which craft to share, I had some parameters to keep in mind:

I would have an hour and a half to give a brief lesson, demonstrate, then assist a maximum of 11 students (ages 4-5) through their project. The teachers and I also wanted to be mindful that no one feel rushed or be timed, so that everyone could work at their own pace until they felt their project was complete. For some that could be five minutes, for others it could be thirty.

I felt like fabric marbling would be a perfect fit.

It’s a fun art/science/motor skill activity rolled into one ✨ It would likely be something new for everyone to try their hand at ✨ Each student’s piece would be totally unique to them based on the colors, tools and movements they used ✨ Floating color is very theraputic ✨ The end result is always a magical surprise (moving liquids + designing as you go) ✨ I was confident that everyone would create something they were extremely proud of ✨

To be sure, we invited a teacher to the studio and demo’d a marbled bandana for her:

With limited prep (mordanting bandanas and mixing size) and an easy transport/set up/break down, we knew we were good to go.

For the privacy of the kiddos I can’t share our time in class (we did make a video)— not all of the parents share their images online, which I totally get and respect ❤️.

Here’s what I can: The project was a huge success, and everyone was even more excited and entertained than I’d anticipated.

The aftermath | a very good and creative time was had 🙌🏻

The finished pieces— for a special touch, I hand stitched each artist’s signature on their bandana in rainbow shashiko thread 🪡🌈🧵

So good, right?!?

P.S. Have rainbows, will travel 👨🏼‍🎨🎨🚀 if you or a group (of any age) would love to take class with me. You can email me here to discuss a custom experience of your very own 🦄

My friend Amanda recently posted this super cute photo, and I was so excited to see the crib sheet I dyed for her {a couple years ago} still being enjoyed. I mean just look at her beautiful babies and all of the colors, patterns and textures 😍 Love.
